Wither Bags
Wither bags are an exceptional innovation for the horse. By placing weight over the front legs—close to the horse’s natural center of gravity—they promote better balance, comfort, and stability while riding.
Our wither bags are inspired by the ammunition bags used by the legendary Australian Light Horse, the cavalry unit that carried out one of the most successful mounted charges in recorded military history: Beersheba, Sinai, 1917. In that charge, 600 mounted men overwhelmed enemy defenses and contributed to the capture of tens of thousands of opposing troops. Historical manuals specified that these ordinance-filled bags should weigh no more than 68 lbs, underscoring the importance of balanced load placement on the horse.
History aside, the design principles remain timeless.
The Small / English Wither Bag
The Small (English-style) wither bag draws inspiration from the pouches carried by English gentlemen over 400 years ago. Traditionally, one side held powder, ball, ramrod, and wadding—along with a few personal items—while the other carried a flintlock pistol.
Today, this same practical layout makes it an ideal place to carry modern essentials such as a cell phone, snacks, drinks, or trail necessities. Best of all, while seated on your horse, everything you need is right there in front of you—easy to access without dismounting or twisting in the saddle.
A historic concept, refined for modern riding.
